Dennis OPPENHEIM


(Electric City, 1938 - New York, 2011)

Biography

Dennis Oppenheim è stato un artista concettuale americano, performer, artista della terra, scultore e fotografo.

Nacque nella piccola città di Electric City, nello stato di Washington, nel 1938. Non c'erano molte opere d'arte, ma sua madre incoraggiò la sua prima attitudine. Suo padre era un ingegnere, il che potrebbe spiegare le incursioni di Oppenheim nella scultura con motori primitivi e parti in movimento. Dopo il liceo ha frequentato il California College of the Arts di Oakland, poi la Stanford University. Si trasferì a New York nel 1966, in seguito acquisendo una casa e uno studio, oltre a diversi assistenti, a Manhattan.

Nel 1969, la documentazione per il progetto di land art di Oppenheim, Annual Rings, fu mostrata alla John Gibson Gallery di New York. Oltre alle mostre in galleria alla Galerie Yvon Lambert, Parigi, e alla Galerie Francoise Lambert, Milano, le opere sono state incluse in "Quando l'attitudine diventa forma" a Berna e "Earth Art" alla Cornell University, Itaca - due delle diciannove mostre collettive dell'artista hanno partecipato in quell'anno.

La pratica di Dennis Oppenheim impiegava tutti i metodi disponibili: scrittura, azione, performance, video, film, fotografia e installazione con e senza suono o monologo. Ha usato elementi meccanici e industriali, fuochi d'artificio, oggetti comuni e materiali tradizionali, materiali della terra, il suo corpo o quello di un altro. Ha creato opere per interni, esterni e spazi pubblici.

Le opere seminali includono Annual Rings, 1968, Reading Position for Second Degree Burn, 1970, Tentativo di sollevare l'inferno, 1974, Scan, 1979, Digestion. Gypsum Gypsies, 1989, Device to Root Out Evil, 1997 e Bus Home, 2003.

Altri progetti pubblici completati nel 2010 sono Journey Home per Grand Rapids, Garden of Evidence per Scottsdale, Arizona, Arriving Home per Chicago, Still Dancing per Toronto, Pathways to Everywhere per Calgary, Radiant Fountain per Houston e Paintbrush Gateway per Las Vegas. Il suo ultimo lavoro è stato Swarm, 2011, che si trova nel campus del Norwalk Community College di Norwalk, CT.

Dennis Oppenheim visse e lavorò a New York City dal 1968 e anche a Springs, East Hampton, dal 1985. Amy Plumb iniziò come assistente nel 1977 e divenne sua moglie nel 1998. Era amico della sua terza moglie, la scultrice Alice Aycock e gli artisti Roger Welch, Bill Beckley e Vito Acconci. I suoi primi due figli Erik e Kristin e la nipote Erin vivono a Brooklyn, New York. Il suo terzo figlio, Chandra, vive nel Maine con sua figlia Issa.

Oppenheim ha ricevuto una Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship nel 1969, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships nel 1974 e 1982, un premio Excellence in Transportation dallo Stato della California nel 2003 e un Lifetime Achievement Award alla Biennale delle Sculture di Vancouver nel 2007.

È morto a New York nel 2011.
