(McKeesport, 1932)

Born in McKeesport, PA, United States, 1932.

He currently lives in New York City.

In 1958 while on a holiday in the ex-Soviet Union he discovered an interest in photography. He describes his photographic skills as “completely self-taught”.

He is well-known for two innovations in artistic photography in the 1960s and 1970s; first he uses a series of photographs to tell a story, as his book Sequences exemplifies and second, he gives info that the image could not convey by writing text near his photograph.

Michals has worked as a commercial photographer for Esquire and Mademoiselle, he also covered the photography of The Great Gatsby for Vogue. He did not have a studio. Michals was also hired by the government of Mexico to photograph the 1968 Summer Olympics.

When his work began to attract great official institutional accolades from the major international museums, including among many the Museo Reina Sofia of Madrid in 1998, and the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2015, Michals became increasingly recognized as a great

photographic storyteller.

His sequences did not exalt just one aspect of the people photographed, but encapsulated modern photography as a whole, recognizable in the vital, psychic narrative tone of the images, also given by the text he wrote under his black-and-white prints.
