Phil SIMS
(Richmond, 1940)
Phil Sims nasce nel 1940 a Richmond, in California.
Prima di dedicarsi alla pittura, Sims svolge il mestiere di vasaio e realizza opere in ceramica.
Negli anni '60 si iscrive al San Francisco Art Institute. Oggi, è considerato uno dei più grandi pittori coloristi a livello internazionale.
All'inizio della sua formazione artistica, studia l'uso che gli artisti dell'Espressionismo Astratto fanno del colore, mantenendo sempre uno sguardo alla pittura Europea più tradizionale (da Piero della Francesca a Tiziano, fino a Rubens).
La sua carriera artistica è inizialmente legata al gruppo dei Radical Painters (Marcia Hafif, Joseph Marioni, Olivier Mosset e Jerry Zeniuk). Tuttavia, nel 1984, dopo la mostra Radical Painting, tenutasi al Williams College Museum of Art in Massachusetts e curata da Thomas Krens, il gruppo decide di sciogliersi e ogni artista segue un percorso di ricerca artistica più autonomo e personale.
Il colore è da sempre un tema centrale nelle opere di Sims, come si può evincere dalla sua tecnica pittorica. Il risultato finale è ottenuto stendendo vari strati di pittura, solitamente tra i quaranta e i sessanta, fino a coprire l'intera superficie della tela con pennellate orizzontali e verticali.
Un vantaggio della tecnica di stesura del colore di Phil Sims è che, strato dopo strato, il colore assume e sprigiona una luminosità unica.
Grazie all'innata sensibilità al colore e alla sua tecnica accurata, il risultato finale è strabiliante: il colore finale si crea dal sommarsi delle varie pennellate, filtrando fino alla superficie.
Oggi, Sims vive e lavora negli Stati Uniti, ma espone spesso in Europa, sia in spazi pubblici che in gallerie private.
