Vincenzo Agnetti in the Permanent Collection of GAM Turin
We are pleased to share an important announcement: GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino has been awarded funding through Strategia Fotografia 2026, an initiative promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, for the acquisition of three works by Vincenzo Agnetti from the Oltre il linguaggio (Beyond Language, 1969–1970) series, connected to his celebrated Macchina drogata (Drugged Machine).
The acquisition is part of the project Vincenzo Agnetti. Oggi è un secolo, promoted by GAM and curated by Chiara Bertola with Virginia Lupo on the occasion of the centenary of the artist’s birth, and continues the research presented in the exhibition currently on view through 1 November 2026.
Created between 1969 and 1970, the three works constitute one of the most radical bodies of work within Agnetti’s artistic research. By altering a calculating machine and subsequently intervening on photographic material, the artist challenges the codes of language, the mechanisms of communication, and the presumed rationality of the machine, anticipating questions that are particularly relevant today concerning the relationship between humans, technology, and automated creativity.
The works will become part of GAM’s permanent collection display in autumn 2026, on the occasion of the presentation of the exhibition catalogue, produced in collaboration with the Archivio Agnetti.
The acquisition thus further consolidates the presence of Vincenzo Agnetti—one of the leading figures of Italian Conceptual Art in the second half of the twentieth century—within the collections of one of Italy’s foremost museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
