Stephen DEAN
(Paris, 1968)
Stephen Dean è un artista franco-americano che viva a New York. Le sue opere, installazioni e acquerelli basati sul tempo, richiamano approcci fisiologici e antropologici al colore. Spesso lavorando a partire da forme o eventi esistenti, Dean si concentra sull'immediatezza del colore e sulla sua capacità di precedere il linguaggio e i codici culturali. Le sue opere contemplative e immersive coinvolgono lo spettro cromatico come materia spaziale e sociale e cercano strutture, modelli e momenti di intensità cromatica nel mondo quotidiano.
Artista autodidatta, Dean ha iniziato a esporre a NY presso il programma AIM del Bronx Museum e presso il Drawing Center Selection Spring a metà degli anni Novanta.
Ha esposto a livello nazionale e internazionale; tra le mostre museali più importanti ricordiamo "Drawing as practice", National Academy of Design, NY; "Art of Sport", Copenhagen Contemporary; "Le cours des choses", CAPC, Bordeaux; "The Beautiful Game", Perez Museum, Miami, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; "Shock of the News", National Gallery of Art, Washington D. Le sue opere sono state presentate alla Biennale di Whitney, alla Biennale di Siviglia, alla Biennale di Istanbul, alla 51a Biennale di Venezia, alla Biennale di SITE Santa Fe e alla Biennale di Mosca.
Nel 2010 ha ottenuto una borsa di studio a Villa Medici, Accademia di Francia a Roma. Nel 2014 la Rice University Public Art gli ha commissionato un'installazione permanente per l'Anderson Clarke Center for Continuing studies. Nel 2017 Dean ha completato un'installazione murale permanente di 70 metri, intitolata "Crosswords", commissionata dal Percent for Art/New York City Department of Cultural Affairs per una scuola pubblica di Brooklyn, NY. L'anno successivo ha ricevuto la borsa di studio della fondazione Peter S. Reed. I suoi primi acquerelli sono stati oggetto di una monografia pubblicata da Bandini Books nel 2020, intitolata "Morning comes without warning". Nel 2022, la sua scultura Prayer Mill fa parte della mostra "Odd Convergences", curata da Jean-Hubert Martin al Museo Pushkin di Belle Arti di Mosca.
La sua installazione Crescendo è attualmente in mostra alla Basilique Saint Denis fino al settembre 2024.
